A Darn Good Week!

I have had one of those weeks that simply leaves a smile on one’s face.  It all began with trips to two companies that are expanding their capacities to brew beer; that always makes me happy.  Later in the week I received an order from a lab mate from UC Davis’ graduate brewing program, and now brewery owner, for more capacity for fermentation space for his growing brewery.  Very cool!  All the while I awoke to depressing reports about the US economy and the on-going debate over health care, but I kept my head down and chugged along.

Later this week our little brewery in Springfield, Missouri released a new special called “Bombay Brown”, which was maybe not so subtly named to invoke the idea of India Brown Ale, and it has gone over exceptionally well.  For a brewer without a small pilot system it’s always nice to launch a new recipe with positive reviews.  So, I am on a trifecta of brewing happiness only three days through the week.

Then I got requests from Virginia Tech and UC Davis for some information regarding their respective needs for equipment related to brewing and wine education, more assistance from another colleague from UC Davis for brewery expansion requirements and guidance assistance from a high school who has chosen brewing as his focus in school.  My trifecta suddenly turned to a Jackpot!

The fact that our country’s economy and immediate outlook is bleak goes without saying.  However, there are some sectors that are growing and attracting interest from our youngsters.  Homebrewing is often more than a hobby and when properly cultivated can lead into a fulfilling career with great colleagues in the beer industry.  While brewing is not likely to reduce national unemployment, there is certainly a continued need for talented and enthusiastic individuals in the brewing field.

Cheers!
